Herbal Weight Loss Products – What to Look For and What to Avoid

By Danna Schneider Herbal weight loss products are an excellent alternative to seeking medical assistance for weight loss medication, and in many cases are more safe and effective than traditional medications for weightloss. So what should you look for in an herbal supplement for losing weight, and what should you avoid? The list could go on and on, since their is literally a laundry list of herbs that will help you burn more calories, suspend and control appetite, and assist in fat burning. We’ll start with an explanation of what herbal fat burners, appetite suppressants and natural thermogenic supplements can do for you. First, they can do the obvious – control your appetite so you eat less. Second, they can boost your energy levels, which in turn helps you burn calories more quickly and efficiently, and also gives you a little mood boost in the process. Third, they can help you burn fat by creating more “internal heat” (thermogenic energy), which in turn burns fat and helps to convert calories to energy rather than to fat. Herbs to Look for in a Weight Loss Product 1.) Concentrated Green Tea Extract – Green Tea has been used as a powerful antioxidant and multifunctional remedy for disease, aging and weightloss assistant for hundreds of years. Green Tea extract also contains natural substances called epigallocatechin gallate or EGCG, which is a known cancer fighter and energy enhancer. 2.) L-Carnitine – This natural compound has several functions as an ingredient in herbal weight loss products and energy enhancing supplements. L-Carnitine is a central player in energy production and maintenance. It assists in the burning of excess body fat by enhancing cellular energy and activity in the brain. L-Carnitine also improves mental and physical performance levels, helps to slow the aging process, decreases symptoms of depression and acts as a mood enhancer, and helps to support bodily functions that typically demand high energy expenditures. 3.) Fucus vesiculosus otherwise known as Bladderwrack – Bladderwrack is an excellent hormone balancer, which in turn can help to control the appetite. Research has documented time and time again that hunger is directly related to fluctuations in hormones and hormonal imbalance – in both men and women. In fact, hunger is controlled by two hormones – one called ghrelin, which was dicovered by scientists in early 2001 as the hormone that regulates hunger and tells the brain when it is time to eat. The other is a more well known hormone called leptin, which controls food intake and body weight and prolongs periods in between food cravings and urges. 4.) Chromium (this one is actually a mineral, but we’ll cheat a little here) – Chromium has been called a “miracle mineral” for its abilities to control and stabilize blood sugar levels. While I wouldn’t go so far as to call it a “miracle mineral”, I will say this – Chromium is a great addition to a weight loss product, since the mineral actually helps in fat reduction and the formation of lean, sculpted muscles through the manipulation and contral of blood sugar, fat storage and the utilization of calories. Herbs to Avoid in an Herbal Weight Loss Product 1.) Guarana – This herb is a stimulant that may cause nervousness, dizziness and sleeplessness in some people. There are individuals that tolerate this herb well, and for those people it can probably be an option for short term usage to boost energy levels and help burn fat. 2.) Ma Huang – Ma Huang diet products or supplements containing Ma Huang, which is just another form of the banned ephedra, are known to also cause nervousness, rapid heart beat and dizziness. Again, if you tolerate caffeine and other stimulants well, this may be a short term weight loss option for you, but is not recommended since there are so many other good herbs out there that will enhance energy levels and burn fat that have ZERO effect on your sense of health and well being, do not cause rapid heart beat of nervousness, and do not cause “let down” periods after the product has worn off. 3.) Cola or cola nut – Another stimulant. Try to avoid it if you can. Well, we’ve covered the basics of herbal diet supplement shopping. Although this list is short, it should give you a basic understanding of what to look for and what to avoid when shopping online or in stores for your diet product. Don’t forget, a good diet must be built on wise food choices and some kind of physical activity to be a success. Herbal diet products can help you get there – you just need to know what you’re getting! Visit Herbal Weight Loss Products for more information on different diet methods, supplements and technology. Maiden Name Search Strategies Or How To Trace Your Family Tree

By Michael D. Weber While it is not always easy to discover the maiden name of a female ancestor, there are numerous approaches which can be successful, and will perhaps lead to you discovering a completely new branch of your family tree. Or perhaps you want to know more about an ancestor or another person you just know the maiden name of. Maybe you will even find living relatives you never knew anything about! The most direct and straightforward method to locate maiden names, or find people by maiden name, is to search through marriage records. This can be done at sites like http://www.findapersonservice.com or http://www.searchmaidenname.com and is usually the best and most reliable option. Marriage records do not only include the marriage license, but also documents like marriage certificate, bonds, and announcements. It is of course helpful to know the marriage location and at least an approximate marriage date – otherwise it can be quite difficult to find the right record. Another source of correspondence between maiden names and other cues are cemetery records. Quite often, they will list women’s maiden names along with the married name, or may also include the maiden name as a middle name or initial. Maiden name lookup is also possible via census, land, church, birth death records. Land is often inherited from father to daughter, with maiden names being included in the deeds. Church records are a good source for christening records, which typically include the names of the parents along with the maiden name of the mother. A couple of sites offer custom-tailored services which simplify and accelerate the process, for instance http://www.searchmaidenname.com. Of course, nobody guarantees that your search will be successful even with such helper tools – but they pretty much take most of the effort out of maiden name research. In God We Should Trust

By Robert Curtis I was recently at the graduation exercises of one of my sons-in-law for his successful training in military intelligence and interrogation. The graduation exercises were held at a local military base. The graduation exercises both began and ended with a prayer to God for the safety and success of our men in uniform in harms way who are fighting this war on terror. I was deeply moved and impressed at the openness and sincerity of our troops who prayed, unashamed and publicly, supplicating the God of the Universe for guidance and support in the continuing struggles against evil that is perpetuating upon this earth. It gave me pause to reflect upon my own attitude, and the attitudes of the majority at large. Do we support the reality and necessity of this battle against evil? It is real. It will not go away on its own. It must be directly confronted and defeated. Diplomacy has not been effective. Active and fearless confrontation is the only moral alternative left for us to employ. Have we learned nothing from the past? Pacifism only encourages the perpetration of evil design. We must support our elected officials in their continuing efforts to overcome. We must actively seek to elect officials who will not surrender our freedoms to the mindless threats of evil militant mobs. We need to support those elected officials whom are willing to rise to the challenge and defend our freedoms and the right to freedom for all mankind. We are, for the most part, a nation of Christians and Christian-minded people. Do we not read in our Bible the following: Curse not the King (President), no not in thy thought (Ecclesiastes 10:20). We elected him. We should, therefore, support or change our choice by election. It is written, Thou shalt not speak evil of the ruler of thy people (Acts 23:5). Two comments: (1) If we dont like the current President, elect a new one. (2) If we refuse to vote, we have no say in the governing style or choices of our leaders. And finally, For so is the will of God, that with well doing (elections), ye may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men (a few, choice congressmen(women) and Senators): As free, and not using your liberty for a cloke of maliciousness (personal agendas and misinterpretations of the laws and will of the people of this nation), but as servants of God. Honour all men. Fear God. Honour the King (President) (1 Peter 2:15-17) Its time for the Silent to stand. Its time to make our voices heard. Does Acupuncture Work?

By Steve Dolan Acupuncture Therapy Chinese medicine is responsible for a number of natural therapies, and acupuncture is probably the best known of them. Basically, acupuncture works on the theory that your body contains energy centers at specific, strategic points. These energy centers are then linked to a particular part of the body. If you have a sore knee, for example, then the acupuncturist would locate the energy center links to that knee. This could well be located in a completely different part of the body. That’s the point where very thin needles are then inserted to stimulate the energy center. The result? The pain in your knee is reduced or removed entirely, by accessing the central nervous system through the acupuncture point. Acupuncture is used to treat many conditions, but pain relief is the most common. It’s an odd concept – inserting needles into your body to reduce pain! But plenty of people find acupuncture. It’s believed that as well as stimulating energy centers, acupuncture stimulates the production of endorphins, known as “feel good” chemicals, which also helps reduce the pain. Other research has shown that acupuncture can assist the immune system by stimulating the production of white blood cells. It’s also been shown that Alpha, Beta and Gamma Globulins increase after acupuncture therapy, and these assist in fighting infection and producing immune antibodies. Recently, acupuncture has been used to assist people recovering from alcohol and drug addiction. Acupuncture focuses on reducing cravings and withdrawal symptoms, tension, and inducing a feeling of relaxation. Sports people at the highest level have turned to acupuncture therapy to help improve both their training and performance. Muscle tension inhibits performance, and acupuncture releases tension in both muscles and the surround tissue, as well improving the efficiency of the nervous, circulatory and lymphatic systems. Acupuncture can also be used to speed up recovery rates from injury and manage pain. Allergies also respond well to acupuncture therapy. Harmless substances can cause the immune system to overreact, leading to an allergic reaction. Many allergies are triggered by common environmental factors such as dust, pollen and chemicals. Many people also suffer from food allergies, which can be triggered by wheat, milk and shellfish, amongst other things. Allergies are uncomfortable – stuffy nose, watery eyes and sneezing. In some sufferers, allergy reaction can result in extreme symptoms such as kidney problems, joint pain and depression. Detoxifying the body and strengthening the immune system with acupuncture helps reduce or eliminate allergic reactions. Many people turn to acupuncture therapy for more serious issues, such as bronchitis, asthma, hypertension and ulcers. Western medicine struggles to understand how acupuncture manages to be so effective, but the results speak for themselves. Some suggest that believing acupuncture will work is the reason it does, but that hasn’t been proven. Sometimes, for more chronic conditions, massage and herbal remedies are used together with acupuncture therapy. Other health issues that often respond well to acupuncture include PMS, chronic fatigue syndrome, stress, menopause and menstruation problems. If you’re interested in trying acupuncture therapy, find yourself a reputable local practitioner, then ring and have a chat with them about your health problems. This will give them the opportunity to say whether or not they think acupuncture can help you. The only way to know for sure is to give it a go. Know Your Credit Score Before Applying for an Auto Loan

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=John_Campbell]John Campbell It is important to know what your credit score is before you apply for an auto loan. Finding out your current score ahead of time will help you determine what lenders may open a new line of credit for you and what rates you may qualify for. To obtain your official credit score you will want to obtain a copy of your credit report from each of the three national credit bureaus – Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. Although Equifax is the most widely accessed credit bureau, lenders may get their reports from one of the other two bureaus. An error on any one of these reports could lower your score and result in you being denied credit. Listed below is the contact information for each of the national credit bureaus: Equifax Equifax Credit Information Services, Inc. P.O. Box 740241 Atlanta, GA 30374 1-888-766-0008 www.equifax.com Experian National Consumer Assistance Center P.O. Box 2002 Allen, TX 75013 1-888-397-3742 www.experian.com TransUnion LLC Consumer Disclosure Center P.O. Box 1000 Chester, PA 19022 1-800-888-4213 www.tuc.com To protect your privacy and verify your identity, each bureau requires that you provide your full name, proof of current address, addresses and Zip codes for places you have lived in the past 5 years, date of birth and social security number. If you are ever denied credit for any reason, you can get a free copy of your credit report from the national credit bureaus. Otherwise, the cost to obtain a copy of your credit report is usually around $9 but may be cheaper in some states. You will need to request your credit score separately. Experian charges an additional fee for a credit score request, with a combined $14.95 charge for both. Once you obtain your credit score you will know how easily you can get an auto loan with good rates and terms. The closer your credit score is to 750-850, the better off you’ll be. If you credit score is in the 600 range or below you will want to find out from lenders what the range of credit scores they will accept before applying for any loans. Finding out what range of credit scores lenders will accept may also help prevent your credit score from being reduced further. Every time a lender checks your credit score, the credit bureaus make a record of the inquiry. Too many inquiries can be seen as a sign of financial instability and your credit score could be lowered as a result. The time you take to find out your credit score on your own, will save you time and hassle later on as you begin searching for an auto loan that is right for you. How Do Water and Juice Fasting Differ?

By Foras Aje Although they are more or less both highly effective forms of fasting, water and juice fasting do have their slight differences. Consequently, they both should be approached with preparation for each type for optimal success. Though fasting is by far a greater cure of our ills-both physical and mental-than all of the drugs of the medical fraternity combined, for weight loss or for anything it may be used for, one has to be aware of certain criteria to achieve success with its use. These include the types of fasts one can use, how long to fast, when to fast and how to come off of a fast. During a water fast, only water is consumed. During a juice fast, any variety of fruit and vegetable juices are consumed. People detoxify and heal more quickly with a water fast than with a juice fast. This is because with a water fasting program, your digestive passageway and organs are able to rest completely, allowing for all of your energy to be used for cleansing and repair of damaged tissues. With a juice fast or a cleansing diet of fruits and vegetables, your body must use energy to digest nutrients, leaving less available energy for detoxification and healing. Another significant difference is that more fat tissue is burned during a water fasting program, as your body must rely exclusively on fat reserves to supply its energy needs after the first 1-3 days of water fasting. Furthermore, a water fasting program is most effective when you are able to get a lot of physical and emotional rest. If your life circumstances don’t allow this, juice fasting is a better choice. Nonetheless, to make a juice fast almost (or if not more effective) you could try these tips. -Masticate the juice as thoroughly as possible. -Have brief 2-3 second pauses between each gulp of juice. -Try not to drink more than 2 quarts of juice and its best to drink it all at one time, preferably in the morning so an hour or so afterwards, the stomach is empty and consequently resting. Well, here are the benefits and differences outlined for you, all in all, I cant say to much of the importance of the occasional fast except once you try it successfully, you will see why it is so highly esteemed. Theatrical Contact Lenses: An Insight into the World of Cinema & Special Effects

By Mike Schwartz Ever wonder how stage actors or movie characters get that eerily captivating look in their eyes? Sure, there is always the CG and special effects route in the movies. Certain lighting schemes can invoke various feelings on the stage. However, the majority of the time, that intrinsic look is a result of theatrical contact lenses. Given the right situation and storyline, theatrical contacts can transform your viewing experience from observer to active participant. In suspenseful thrillers, theatrical contacts can just flat out scare you. In the world outside of theatrics, they also do a pretty great job of terrifying children of all ages around Halloween as well. Theatrical contact lenses come in a wide assortment of themes and colors. Many rock musicians wear theatrical contacts that black out the pupil making the eye appear to shun light. The white out theatrical lens gives off that angry look popularized by the Hulk in the old television series. Other popular themes include bloodshot contacts and various animal associations such as zebra, jaguar, and the always popular cat pupil. If you are trying to find the particular contact used by your favorite monster in the latest horror movie, you may be out of luck. Most movies have special effect contacts specially designed to fit the characters needs. However, if you search around deep enough, you may stumble across a generic knockoff that generates the same effect. Although there are a variety of companies that manufacture and sell theatrical contacts, the two most popular brands carried by most opticians are CooperVisions Crazy Lenses and CIBA Visions WildEyes. CIBA Vision also makes the immensely popular FreshLook line of color contacts. It is important to note that the same rules for purchasing, wearing, replacing, and caring for regular contact lenses also apply for theatrical contact lenses and cosmetic lenses. This means that you must have a prescription to purchase them. Even if you dont need vision correction, you must still go to an optometrist to be examined, prescribed, and fitted for all styles of contact lenses including special effects contacts. If you are looking for a fun way to breathe new life into a character, transform your production without costly cg effects or simply terrify kids this Halloween season, look into purchasing a pair of theatrical contact lenses. There are numerous varieties to choose from. Talk to your optometrist about ordering your new pair of special effect contact lenses today. Exclusive – Interview With Brenda Watson – Author of The Fiber 35 Diet

By Kelly Jad’on Recently, I interviewed Ms. Brenda Watson C.N.C. about her new book, the Fiber 35 Diet. She is a knowledgable individual with a tremendous background in Alternative Medicine. KJ: Why did you write Fiber 35 Diet? BW: Fiber 35 Diet is my 4th book. Prior to its publication I was a self-published author and particularly focused on digestive disorders with Dr. Leonard Smith. Ive always known about the benefit of fiber in diet. Between the age of 42 and 48 I gained weight, even though I was into naturopathy. KJ: Why? BW: Fiber rich diets have been found to be the best. I had eaten too much protein. So, I completed a large deal of research regarding fiber intake. People dont count fiber. Dr. Dennis Burkett went to Africa to study the African diet, which includes 60-80g fiber a day. The indigenous people there are free from digestive problems, hemorrhoids, heart disease varicose veins, bowel disease, diverticulitis, diabetes. Americans need to count their fiber intake. BW: The average fiber supplement delivers 3-5g. I hadnt been eating whole grains. So, I began to count the grams of fiber I ate. You need 35g for good health. A study at the University of California showed that more CCK is produced after eating a high fiber meal, just like when eating a high fat meal. My personal venture turned into the fiber flush effect. The fiber flush effect is based on an average of 7 calories being excreted for every gram of fiber consumed. The average American eats 10 to 12g of fiber a day, flushing approximately 70-84 calories. This needs to be increased to 35g of fiber daily. Less calories are absorbed this way. BW: I also made the mistake of not weighing myself. Its good to do this, once or twice a week. KJ: I rarely do this myself. BW: You need to get a baseline of calories per your body weight to have an idea of your needed caloric intake. You can follow a formula to determine your necessary caloric intake in the Fiber 35 Diet book. I also outline the necessary amount of daily exercise to burn calories. The main thing, however, is to count fiber grams not calories. It also is extremely important to read the labels of food purchases. Do not buy anything under 3 grams of fiber per serving. For example, a whole wheat wrap should usually contain 3-7 grams of fiber. Multi-grain does not always mean whole grain. KJ: Who do you perceive your typical reader to be? BW: Women, aged 35 and up KJ: What significant health problems do you believe Americans face due to their lack of fiber? BW: $120 billion is spent on medical care for digestive problems each year. Increased fiber means reduced: heart attacks, diverticulitis, irritable bowel syndrome, reflux and GERD, to name a few. KJ: You state in the introduction that 35g of fiber daily will help drop weight and reduce the chances of developing heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, diabetes, and cancer. Fiber 35What does 35 grams of fiber a day look like? BW: Breakfast–7g orange, 8g steel cut oats rather than regular oats Lunch 10g salad of romaine, spinach, walnuts, chickpeas and chicken Snack 4g hummus (2T), with celery and carrots, or flax crackers Dinner salmon, 11g acorn squash and kale The total is around 35g-40g of fiber. KJ: Thats easy! BW: People need options. A health food store will have shake drinks with fiber and protein in them and there are some good fiber bars too. KJ: What are our best sources of fiber? BW: Raw veggies and whole grains. Read the labels. People with digestive disorders made lightly steam their vegetables. KJ: Which foods are our enemies? BW: Sugar and processed foods. KJ: Not long ago, cancer was the worst word I could hear on a daily basis. Today it is an everyday word. From your perspective, what are the top to do items for cancer avoidance? BW: Detox and eat a plant-based organic diet. A specific program using herbs, detox, water, fiber, and infrared sauna should be followed. Infrared sauna is widely used by holistic doctors in clinics and is very safe. An infrared sauna produces radiant heat, and the heat creates sweating; the patient sweats out heavy metals and other toxins. KJ: I understand that several years ago you yourself struggled with health issues. BW: About 20 years ago. I became interested in naturopathy and became a colon hydrotherapist. In 1990 I began a clinic apprenticeship, and from 1993-1998 I owned 5 holistic clinics. KJ: I read that you are also a Naturopathic Doctor. How is naturopathy different from the mainstream medical establishment? BW: Herbs are studied as well as neutriceuticals, ie. vitamins and antioxidants. KJ: Are you part of alternative medicine? BW: Yes, Dr. Leonard Smith, an associate professor at the University of Miami, and I have worked together during the holistic movement. We aim to educate the patient using a holistic approach. KJ: Has alternative medicine gone mainstream? BW: Yes, but the media is still behind in this. In New York City for example, there is a lack of awareness by the media in general. KJ: Todays consumer recognizes that organic foods are superior to those treated with pesticides. Some people cannot afford organics. Any recommendations for this group? BW: Buy the washes for veggies for fruits; use natural home products like vinegar and baking soda. A study called the Toxic Body Burden was completed using volunteers. The average toxins within each person was 91. Our bodies arent detoxing as well as we think they are. Recently, a phasing out of the dry cleaning solvent perchloroethylene (perc) in California has been made law. The chemicals are known carcinogens and have been linked to bladder, esophageal and other cancers. Several people living in a building above a dry cleaning business had become ill, and an investigation was begun. KJ: When you were writing the Fiber 35 Diet, how much research did you put into it? BW: 2 years worth KJ: The book states that an individual goes through 3 phases. Phase 1 and 2 shed pounds by eating fiber and exercising. Phase 3 is a lifetime maintenance program. How long do Phases 1 and 2 take? BW: Phase 1 lasts approximately 1-2 weeks and Phase 2 takes around 1 month. No one is ever under 1200 calories. KJ: Is a colon cleanse necessary? If so, why? BW: Not always, this is only necessary when an individual is constipated. A person needs to move the bowels every day, and very well. When constipation occurs, I recommend a 7 day or 14 day cleanse. Constipation effects the ability to lose weight. It slows the metabolic rate, which results in overeating and leads to autointoxication (self-poisoning). KJ: In a nutshell, what is the difference between your diet book and the others? BW: Fiber 35 Diet is well-rounded, is not a fad, involves sound research, and is simplistic. Most meals can be assembled in less than 30 minutes and I provide a once-a-week shopping list. Its a no-brainer. Lifestyle is important too as well as exercise. On my PBS special I highlight a 20 minute upper and lower exercise DVD for a total body workout. The same routine is in the Fiber 35 Diet book. It utilizes resistance bands which can be used by anyone with neck and back issues. KJ: Brenda, thank you, and much success with your new book, Fiber 35 Diet. BW: Thank you. True Love – Part 1

By Adeyemi Adetosoye True Love! We all dream of being in love with that significant other, at some point in our lives. Is it better to have loved once than not to have loved at all? If this is really the case, then how do we actually find true love? How can a man or a woman really get to the core of the whole relationship game? What are the rules of such a game? More often than not, it is not uncommon to find that either one partner feels really strongly about the other, whilst the other just bides time because he or she is the only one available at the time. The key to marriage and happily-ever-after, lies first and foremost, with finding the right person. A lot of folks believe that there may be just one unique individual for every person in the world. I however, beg to differ. Wherever one goes, there is always the possibility of meeting one or more persons who uniquely match our tastes – philosophically, culturally, materially, emotionally and of course, physically (those sure do come a dime a dozen). Okay, lets get down to brass tacks here. Why would one person be into another, whilst the other hardly misses a beat? There are a myriad of reasons, reasons which I will discuss in other articles. For now, wed discuss the most fundamental one: Maybe he/she is not your true love. This leads us to a definition of the same. What is true love? Simply put, true love is the epitome of all your needs and desires in the other person, to a large extent. To a large extent? I hear you ask. Surely, to a large extent, because you can NEVER meet another human being who perfectly epitomizes what you truly desire in a significant other. To a large extent, however, it is possible to find such a one, but only just so. Lets analyze the last bit of my discourse for instance. Twins born of the same womb would hardly always see eye to eye over the same issue. Husbands and wives, even after 50 years of marriage would still not see eye-to-eye on certain issues, yet they live together: happily, we hope. Hence, why wait for the perfect person? Humans are basically emotional and whimsical creatures. We are not robots, cannot be programmed to do only the same things. The only way we discipline ourselves is via several years of repetition, till we perform almost by rote. Therefore, we can never be perfect. Not in everything. You can never get another man just the exact flavor, the exact shade, the exact build, the exact manner of laughter, the exact you name it. Even if heor shes of pristine character, he may defer from his ways just because. Because what? Just because. BECAUSE WHAT? CAUSE I FELT LIKE IT, OKAY? Whimsical Creatures. It could have been anything. The room temperature, the color of the sky, his boss may have spoken rudely to him, he got drenched in the rain, blah, blah, blah. Okay, so dont look for perfection. Thats the first general rule of finding true love. Save Money – Use Less – Do Great Anyway!

By Elisabeth Mcgill In an effort to save the Planet, cut down on consumption and spend less, my family came up with some excellent ideas that really work for us. First we made a plan of what we wanted to achieve and then we looked where we could implement it without drastic discomfort. Here is a plan you, your family, even neighborhood might like to copy: In order to achieve the objectives of using and spending less and also be Earth friendly in acknowledgement of Earth Day, have all participants meet to define your objective and then ask each member to contribute 3 or more ideas how to do it. If possible, have a dedicated writer, who writes each idea down as it is suggested . That can be in a notepad or on a poster board. Briefly outline how to do the suggested ideas. Once you have a list of tings that were suggested, go over them again and then decide either as individuals or as a group to be responsible for their implementation and what exactly it is that makes it complete. It is better to set a deadline for how long or by when the project is to be completed. Hold people responsible for their commitment but also consider rewards for successful outcomes. That can be for individuals or for the group. Make adjustments for the age and health of each member. Young children or those with physical limitations must not be over burdened so they will not lose interest. Here are suggestions of how to get started, however, your group might have even better ideas. Recycle by using paper and plastic grocery bags more than once. Everybody is to remind shoppers to take the bags back to the stores. The kids had fun with that one, yelling before we left “take bags back” and rushing to get some to take back. We discovered that many bags were good for several trips. Recycle packaging and make sure to cut out all tokens for school supplies from manufacturers. If you don’t have kids in school, find a neighbor or coworker who does or contact a school directly. Check if unsolicited mail has empty pages and use for shopping lists, doodling etc. Recycle cans, bottles and newspapers. If you do not have collection services, find out if a local church, youth group or organization has recycling drives to earn money for their groups. Use less: There are many places where using less is barely noticeable. You can cut many things in half or at least use less of it. Use half the amount of recommended detergent, cut dryer sheets in half, rip paper towels in half or buy the rolls with shorter towels. Use less sugar or fat in recipes. Turn lights off when you leave a room that is not used after you leave. Except for reading, use lower wattage light bulbs or get the high efficiency bulbs that use less electricity as well as last so much longer. Take shorter showers, turn off the water while brushing your teeth. Combine trips and get your shopping done with one trip instead of several to save gas as well as time. If you can walk or bike to work or school, do it at least some days. Do weeding and some pest control mechanically rather than using chemical sprays. Saved money for treats: You will be surprised how a number of small adjustments add up to nice savings. If you can actually determine the savings, consider starting a piggy bank and use the money saved for something special. A family might use the saved money for a trip or a night out treat. Some special treats can be bought for individual children who have successfully achieved their commitment. That in turn will encourage everybody to keep on continuing the project or you can call a new meeting to do a different one. We all can save money and resources by using less and still be doing great anyway! The author has a Home and Garden Decor business. She is also an avid gardener with many years of experience and likes to share her knowledge with others.
